
Sign language interpreting in higher education: International and local perspectives
"In the pursuit of higher education in Hong Kong, d/hh students face challenges in accessing classroom information in real time through the auditory mode. On the topic of the Sign Language Interpreting experiences of d/hh students in higher education, this session offers a first-hand perspective from a professional Hong Kong Sign Language interpreter and d/hh students. The workshop provides an overview of qualifications, training and development trends of sign interpreters both internationally and in Hong Kong, while clarifying some common misconceptions towards Sign Language and Sign Language Interpreting. The workshop will also talk about the standards and importance of Sign Language Interpreting services.
This session aims to provide insight into the practice of interpretation services for d/hh students in tertiary education for student service professionals and educators, as well as to discuss the best practices and considerations for Sign Interpreting in higher education.
